One of the things I’ve been considering lately as I’m working to purge objects from our home is what are the legacy pieces we have. I have a couple of book collections from my mom’s childhood and some books from my own childhood. So as I’ve been looking for books for Sarabeth and building her collection I’ve been searching for legacy pieces. Christmas Love Letters from God is definitely one of those pieces!
Christmas Love Letters from God by Glenys Nellist
Christmas Love Letters from God is a beautiful collection of Bible stories for children. Nellist uses scriptures from Isaiah, Luke, and Matthew to weave together the story of Jesus. The story is a beautiful mix of storytelling and poetry and illustrations. Clowes’ collection of artwork and pictures of tokens share pieces of the story in a beautiful way. So beautiful that I’m hiding it from Sarabeth for a few years. The pages are nice and thick, which means it will stand up to little ones better than most books with paper pages.
I know that kids will love the life-the-flap feature, that shares letters from God specifically for the child reading the book. The letters made me tear up a bit and I loved how they tied the story of Jesus into the child’s life. You can choose to write the child’s name in the book, or leave it blank so it can be personalized. I can see saving this book as an heirloom and sharing it with your grandchildren and beyond!
I appreciated the trueness of the narrative to scripture, and even the careful use of pictures to show that the wise men did not show up in the stable, but when baby Jesus was older. This showed careful attention to detail for me!
