We’re almost there, friends. Christmas is next week. We will gather with friends, family and those we love. We will go to candlelight services, care for babies in the nursery, and open gifts. But ultimately, I hope you celebrate love himself – Jesus.
We give gifts because we love. We gather because of love. We draw near to God because of love. This season centers on love. We are surrounded by it, it flows through the melodies of so many songs. It should ultimately move through all the things that we do.
Despite the fact that we know that love is what draws all things together this season. When we chose to find ways that are beyond ourselves to show love to others, we enter love a little bit more. We find ways to be Jesus to others. We share his love with others and embody who he is.
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35
God has commanded us to live love. When we do so, it shows others that we are his disciples. Sometimes, this is the hardest one for me. Because love calls us to move beyond ourselves, set our selfish desires aside and move towards being more like Jesus. This call isn’t something we can do on our own. We have to rely on Jesus in order to step beyond what we feel we are able to do to love others. We have to trust that he is going to fill us up with his love when we pour ourselves out on those around us.
God’s love for us is greater than anything we can ever imagine. It goes beyond what we can understand. And it draws us closer to him as he seeks us out. He is always chasing us. Always trying to draw us closer to himself. And as he loves us, we must seek to love those around us.
How can you love beyond yourself this season?
