Barnabas was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and strong in faith. And many people were brought to the Lord. Acts 11:24, NLT
The Legacy Life of Barnabas
What I hadn’t realized until I started digging was this man most know as Barnabas was really named Joseph. Barnabas is a nickname that means encourager. I knew the meaning of the name. But what really stuck out to me was the fact that he was such an encourager of others that he became known by that character trait!
Think about that.
I imagine Barnabas couldn’t have a conversation with someone without offering a piece of encouragement. It became who he was as a person. It was such a strong thing that he was given a new name. And he’s mostly known by that name of encourager. Really, I only found one reference to Barnabas as Joseph. And that was the explanation of what his nickname was.
What Character Trait Defines You?
Is there a character trait that defines you? Something that people say about you? Are you an amazing gift giver? A hostess who makes everyone feel at home? A lover? A grace giver? Do you exude that trait enough that someone would want to give you a new name?
If there was one thing you wished people would say about you what would it be?
It kind of reminds me of the idea of picking one word for your year. You spend time choosing that word and then cultivating it in your life. It’s a habit you want to build, a thing you want to be about.
When you spend time focusing on that one thing for a while, it becomes what you’re known for. It is what people seek to learn from you. It’s that thing you can’t stop talking about!
Spend some time today thinking about what it is that defines you. I’d love to hear in the comments!
