I love retelling Sarabeth the legacy life of Hannah. She may not fully comprehend the story, so we focus on the fact that Hannah prayed and that God answered her prayer! Sarabeth’s favorite page in her Bible Belles story of Hannah is the page of Hannah holding a baby. She cries out “a baby!” and signs it, rocking her arms back and forth.
Bible Belles calls Hannah the Belle of Prayer. And that description is so correct. Hannah teaches us the power of perseverance and bringing our requests to God.
The Legacy Life of Hannah
Hannah was a woman with deep sorrow. She wanted a child so desperately, but the Bible tells us that God closed her womb. Because of her lack of a child, Hannah was teased mercilessly. She was scorned and shunned even within her own home.
However, Hannah did not let this interrupt her journey with God. Instead, she allowed this tragedy to draw her closer to God. She prayed earnestly and sought God in the places where she knew he could be found – the Temple.
One thing that always strikes me about her story is that Hannah is not bothered by outward appearances. While she is asking God so earnestly for a child, Eli – the priest – observes her and believes she is drunk. Hannah is so focused on God while making her requests that she has little or no regard for anyone else around her.
When she was interrupted by Eli, she told him her request for God. Eli saw how strong her desire was, and how earnestly she was seeking God for the desires of her heart. His parting words to her were to go believing because God had heard her prayer and would answer it.
Persevere, Seek and Go
We’ve entered into a series on Prayer at church this week. One of the takeaways from the service yesterday was the reminder that we must actively believe that God is going to do what is best for us when we seek his heart in it.
Hannah wasn’t just praying for a child. She was praying for the child that God wanted her to have. A child that could be used by God.
She persevered, she sought God and His heart, and she went in faith.
And when she did this, she received as Sarabeth says: A baby!
God heard and answered. Hannah fulfilled her promise to give baby Solomon back in service to the Lord.
What are you asking God for today? Have you sought His desire in this situation? Are you believing in faith that it’s going to happen?
