Still Life by Dani Pettrey

It’s not too often these days that I pick up a fiction novel. In all my attempts to be productive with my time and pack as much as I can into my weeks, reading for fun has dropped off the list of priorities. Luckily for me, some of my favorite authors are releasing books this spring, causing me to jump back on the wagon of reading purely for pleasure. One of those authors is Dani Pettrey, who just released the second novel of the Chesapeake Valor series, Still Life.

Somehow, I missed the first book in this series. However, that did not deter me from enjoying this story.

Still Life brings several twists and turns

Still Life tells the story of Avery and her search for her missing best friend. She turns to her former boss, Parker, to help her track down her friend. In the first few chapters of the book, you are reintroduced to the friend group that Parker and Avery belong to. At first, I was a little confused by all of the names and trying to sort out how everyone knew each other. I was able to sort things out quickly and was able to dive deep into the story.

This story took several turns I wasn’t expecting and kept me guessing throughout the pages. With the addition of a second mystery to solve, unexpected plot twists were happening at a pace that made me not want to put the book down. I kept saying “one more chapter” so that I could see what was coming next.

The characters provided each other support in a realistic way. And that made me wish I were a part of their friend group. The way they utilized one another’s strengths. And they supported each other in weakness was a picture of what true community can look like.

I’m excited to see how the Chesapeake Valor series unfolds when book 3 comes out this fall! Make sure you pick up your copy of Still Life now!

I received a copy of this book from Bethany House. This review is my own, honest opinion.
